Faith Based Transitional Housing Program
ERCPCP is working with its partners to address the transitional and permanent housing needs of the community. In response to a serious shortage of affordable housing in DC in general and a non-existent supply of transitional and permanent housing for ex-offenders in particular, ERCPCP has entered the housing arena. In order to provide housing as a base for independence, productivity and stability for its program participants and low income east of the river residents, ERCPCP has partnered with Johnson Memorial Baptist Church (JMBC) and formed an entity to purchase and develop properties. As of 2003, the new entity, JMBC & ERCPCP, Inc., has purchased and developed a 14-unit apartment building located at 4115 1st Street, S.E. - on the same block as the ERCPCP office. The building is currently being used as transitional housing for ERCPCP’s re-entry program participants with a few units being made available to members of Johnson Memorial Baptist Church. ERCPCP is providing the housing as only one component of a comprehensive set of services offered to ex-offenders under the Faith Based Re-Entry Initiative.
The property at 4115 1st Street was developed through funding provided by Enterprise Community Partners and the District of Columbia government. Due to the success of this project and continued support of these partners, JMBC & ERCPCP, Inc. is now setting the wheels in motion for other ventures. This new entity has begun implementing a housing strategy aimed at supporting the housing needs of seniors and low income residents as well as continuing its mission to aid ex-offenders in becoming self-sufficient by moving them from prison to permanent housing.
ERCPCP is also a partner with the Bellevue Housing Center, an effort lead by Inner Thoughts Inc. with involvement from CSOSA, JOBS Coalition, Healthy Concepts, DC Historical Society and others. The Bellevue provides homeownership counseling in addition to a host of other social services. |
